Secondhand Stories Chicken Sanctuary Achieves Success in Fundraising and Animal Care

The Secondhand Stories Chicken Sanctuary in Rideau Lakes, Canada, has recently made significant strides in both fundraising and animal care. The sanctuary, which has been in operation for three years, is dedicated exclusively to chickens and is run by Liz Wheeler and her partner, Craig.

In early June, the sanctuary hosted an online auction, surpassing its $3,000 goal. Interestingly, all the funds raised during this event went towards one surgery for one of the sanctuary's chickens, Rolo. Thanks to the successful surgery, Rolo now enjoys an amazing quality of life.

The sanctuary's second annual open house is scheduled for Aug. 30. Tickets for this event, priced at a donation of $10 per person, can be purchased on the sanctuary's website. Proceeds from the open house will go towards the sanctuary's medical contingency fund, which has been crucial in covering the close to $15,000 in medical expenses the sanctuary has incurred this year.

Wheeler, the sanctuary's co-founder, is passionate about showing that there is a standard of care for chickens that can be accomplished. The sanctuary's ultimate goal is to demonstrate that there's another way to treat chickens, one that prioritises their wellbeing and happiness.

The sanctuary currently houses 22 hens and roosters, which are divided into six different flock families. Each flock has a powered, insulated coop and extended outdoor run, providing them with a comfortable living space. The hens and roosters are also given monitored free time in the grass and garden, allowing them to enjoy the outdoors.

The Secondhand Stories Chicken Sanctuary is more than just a place for these animals to live. It's a sanctuary where they can live the best life possible for as long as they feel good. For more information about the sanctuary or to purchase tickets for the Aug. 30 open house, visit their website.
