In the bustling landscape of China's auto market, July 2023 saw a 2% increase in new car sales compared to the previous period, with approximately 1.775 million vehicles sold, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The month was marked by a significant surge in the sales of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), including electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). NEVs accounted for 36% of the total sales, underlining their growing significance in the market.
In the conventional car segment, the BYD Qin Plus was the undisputed leader, with sales of 37,129 units, followed closely by the BYD Song Plus, which sold 29,991 units. BYD continued to assert its dominance, becoming the top-performing auto brand in China for the month, selling 219,736 vehicles.
The BYD Seagull was the best-selling model in the pure electric car segment for July, with sales of 24,989 units. BYD also held an impressive 48% share in the PHEV market. The Tesla Model Y was the second best-selling pure electric car, with sales of 23,632 units, while Aion secured the second spot as the second-best selling pure electric brand, selling 45,025 cars.
Toyota claimed the third spot in the conventional car sales, selling 134,316 vehicles, while Volkswagen was the second best-selling brand, with sales totaling 178,745 cars. Honda followed in fourth place, with 89,529 vehicles sold.
Interestingly, the Volkswagen Lavida was the third best-selling car in China for July, with sales of 28,898 vehicles. However, it's worth noting that some models may not be fully sold in the Chinese market due to export reasons.
Rounding off the top five was Changan, which recorded sales of 85,248 cars. It's important to mention that there is a difference in sales data for some models due to logistics and distribution reasons.
The Geely brand, which is usually among the top 10 in sales, had the lowest sales success in China in July 2023. This is attributed to Geely's supply volume being lower at the beginning of a quarter compared to other months.
Tesla's sales strategy impacted its ranking, causing it to rank 17th in July 2023. Despite this, Tesla secured the third spot in the pure electric brand sales, selling 31,423 vehicles.
