Exploring unpopulated European locals: A rising preference for smaller nations in Europe
Sweden leads the way in overnight stays for camping holidays in Northern Europe, with Denmark and Norway close behind. The Scandinavian countries' emphasis on sustainability makes them particularly attractive for environmentally conscious campers.
Camping holidays in Europe remain popular, with France being the most popular camping destination, boasting over 141 million overnight stays. However, other countries are not far behind. Germany could slightly increase and remains in fourth place, while Italy had to accept losses and is just behind.
Smaller European countries, such as Ireland, Albania, Poland, and Bulgaria, have seen significant increases in popularity for camping holidays. In recent years, countries like Austria and Germany have experienced significant growth in overnight stays for camping holidays, with both countries ranking among the top destinations in European camping rankings. Austria's tourism sector remains competitive despite economic challenges, and regions such as Austria's Upper Austria and Germany's Mosel area are notable for attracting camping tourists.
Even traditional camping countries like the Netherlands had to record noticeable losses. On the other hand, countries such as Albania and Bulgaria have seen increases of over 21 percent and around 14.5 percent, respectively. Ireland has experienced an increase of over 40 percent in overnight stays.
For those planning a camping holiday in Europe, safety and preparation are key. International expert Anne-Katrin Schwanitz discusses safe travel with a motorhome in a video, covering topics such as proper loading, tire management, vehicle checks, safety with gas cylinders and gas cookers, fire protection, finding the right campsite, and insurance coverage for van life.
Traveling from Northern Europe to Ireland by motorhome can be done via direct connections from northern French ports (Cherbourg and Roscoff), or alternatively, the route can lead via Great Britain with connecting ferries to Dublin, Rosslare, Belfast, or Larne. The crossing to Cork, Rosslare, or Dublin from northern French ports takes about 18 hours.
