During the last fortnight, I abstained from observing any tennis games. A traditionally annual event that I have fond memories of and once delighted in immensely, now appears void of the legendary players that provided such thrill. I am aware that when one decides to relax and watch a game from...

Headline: A Tennis-Loving Brit Roots for Italian Victory at Wimbledon

Subhead: As the annual tournament unfolds, one spectator shares their passion for the sport and the country they admire.

For over three years, the speaker has been honing their Italian language skills using the popular language learning app, Duolingo. But their love for Italy extends beyond vocabulary and grammar; it reaches the courts of Wimbledon.

As the men's final approached, the speaker's brother inquired about their allegiance, to which the speaker expressed a desire for the Italian player to claim victory. This passion for all things Italian is not a recent development; the speaker grew up watching and enjoying tennis, a love that has only grown stronger with time.

This year's men's final was a thrilling contest between Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. In 2024, it was Alcaraz who emerged triumphant, but the 2025 tournament is yet to be decided. The speaker, along with Mum, will be watching both the women's and men's finals with bated breath.

Interestingly, the women's final featured players from America and Poland. The Polish player ultimately won the match, securing a lifetime membership at Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club. The American player, unfortunately, lost the match significantly.

The speaker took a moment during the event to capture a special memory, snapping a picture of Mum and sending it to close family. However, Mum herself had a less eventful experience, dozing off during the Men's Singles Final.

Notably, Arthur Ashe, a legendary figure in tennis history, was remembered before the Men's Singles Final. His wife and family were present at the event, invited to celebrate his enduring legacy. Ashe passed away 50 years ago, but his influence continues to resonate on the courts of Wimbledon.

Many sportspeople, including Sinner, demonstrate excellent command of English, a testament to the global reach of the sport. Sinner's victory in the Men's Singles Final earned him a lifetime membership at the All-Tennis club, another prestigious honour to add to his collection.

In the past two weeks, the speaker had not watched any tennis, but their absence from the courts did not dampen their enthusiasm for the sport. If given the chance to choose their nationality at the start of time, the speaker would choose Italian, such is their admiration for the country and its culture.

As the Wimbledon tournament comes to a close, the speaker looks forward to next year, hoping for more exciting matches, new memories, and, of course, Italian victories.
