Union Fans Take to the Waters in Annual Dragon Boat Regatta

In a unique blend of tradition and sportsmanship, various fan groups of 1. FC Union Berlin have been participating in the annual Dragon Boat regatta in Brandenburg since 2022. The event, which takes place at the Grünau racecourse in Berlin, has grown in popularity since its inception.

The fan group "Garmen (& Women) Group" has been a regular participant since its debut in 2022. Another long-time participant is "Die Eisernen," who have been racing for an impressive 22 times with the motto "Hawaii." The Ultrasüßen fan club is no stranger to the race either, making its third appearance this year.

The regatta was originally organised by Müller's fan club in 2022, a year after its foundation. Sven Müller, the organiser of the event, is also a fan representative of 1. FC Union and the chairman of "Eiserner V.I.R.U.S. e.V."

The Dragon Boat race is self-financing, with entry fees partially covering the costs. Union fans also contribute by selling drinks and sausages at stands. The number of teams participating has grown since the first regatta, which had 16 teams. Estimated 6000 people attended the event on a Saturday in late August.

Meanwhile, off the racecourse, the club continues to show its commitment to the community. Every Tuesday, the food bank at the fan house near the Alte Försterei provides donated groceries and warm meals for 50 cents to those struggling economically. The foundation associated with 1. FC Union Berlin occasionally enables fans with limited budgets to participate in away games of the professionals.

Josh Field, a former Birmingham City player, joined 1. FC Union Berlin due to the club's atmosphere reminiscent of the English Premier League. He can often be spotted wearing a red-and-white t-shirt with the words "Bamsegjengen," which is Norwegian for "Bear Gang." Sam Witt, a member of the fan club, is known for wearing a necklace of artificial flowers during the event.

As Union fans prepare for the Bundesliga clash against BVB this Sunday, more than 3000 are planning to travel to Dortmund. The spirit of camaraderie and competition that the Dragon Boat regatta embodies seems to be a constant force driving the Union fan community.
