Fast-bowling newcomer claimed for initial South Africa ODI, Jofra Archer reappears for England
England Announce Squad for First ODI Against South Africa
England have announced their squad for the first ODI against South Africa, scheduled to take place on September 2 at Headingley in Leeds. The three-match series will mark the return of Jofra Archer to the England ODI XI, who last played in the Champions Trophy campaign in March.
Joe Root, Harry Brook (c), Jos Buttler (wk), Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, and Sonny Baker are all part of the squad.
Harry Brook will captain England in this series, marking his second ODI stint as full-time white-ball captain. Brook's leadership was evident during the West Indies series, where he scored a 28-ball 64 in the final match. Meanwhile, Jamie Smith has been retained as England's opening partner, rewarding him for his impressive performance in the West Indies series.
Smith was England's second-highest run-getter during the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, scoring a career-best 184 not out. His form continued in the series opener against West Indies in May, where he scored a career-best 82.
Brydon Carse will complete the three-pronged fast-bowling line-up for England. Carse, along with Adil Rashid, has been named as the specialist bowlers for the series. Rashid, who has been in impressive form, will lead the spin attack.
Sonny Baker, the 22-year-old fast bowler, is set to make his England ODI debut in the first match against South Africa. Baker impressed during the England Lions tour of Australia in January with figures of 4-43, 1-28, and 3-60. He also picked up nine wickets at an average of 16.22 and an economy of 7.68 during the Manchester Originals' Men's Hundred campaign.
South Africa enters the series on the back of a 2-1 victory over Australia. The series promises to be an exciting contest between two strong teams.
