Favoritism for Ohio State in CFP National Championship heightened after dominating victory in Rose Bowl game

Ohio State's performance in the Rose Bowl makes it challenging for any opponent remaining in the College Football Playoff to achieve victory. If the Buckeyes maintain their Rose Bowl form, it seems improbable for other teams to claim victory.

Ohio State University's Buckeyes have had an unexpected yet impressive run in the College Football Playoff (CFP), securing their spot in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on January 10 at AT&T Stadium.

The Buckeyes, who previously lost to Michigan to end their regular season, have been on a winning streak since the CFP began. They started strong, defeating Tennessee in the first round, and continued their dominance against Oregon in the quarterfinal, winning 41-21. The Buckeyes led Oregon 34-8 at halftime, a testament to their strong performance.

Coach Ryan Day's Buckeyes have been favored by six or more points against most opponents, including Texas, according to various sportsbooks. The Longhorns had a close game against Arizona State in the Peach Bowl, needing two overtimes and a controversial no-targeting call to win.

Oddsmakers have significantly reduced Ohio State's odds to win the National Championship, with DraftKings and ESPN Bet giving them +120, FanDuel and BetMGM at +125, and Caesars Sportsbook at +130. Ohio State currently sits as the favourite, with Texas (+320), Penn State (+500), and Georgia and Notre Dame (+700) following closely behind.

The winner of the Sugar Bowl, which was postponed, will be favored against Penn State and presumably have shorter odds than 5/1. DraftKings has Penn State as a one-point underdog in the Capital One Orange Bowl against the winner of the Sugar Bowl.

The College Football Playoff game on January 2, 2025, saw Ohio State and Oregon face off. ESPN's Win Probability Index gave Ohio State a 99.4% chance of winning when the score was 31-0 in the second quarter, highlighting the Buckeyes' strong performance throughout the match.

Ohio State advanced to the CFP semifinals, where they will play SEC champion Texas once more. The Buckeyes and the Longhorns will meet again on January 10 in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic at AT&T Stadium. Coach Day has stated that he wants to win a national championship, and with their current form, the Buckeyes are certainly in with a chance.
