Washington voicing concerns over National Guard's deployment - Federal authorities bring legal action against the National Guard in Washington
The District of Columbia has taken legal action against the US President Donald Trump's administration, with Attorney General Brian Schwalb filing a lawsuit mid-last month. The lawsuit alleges that the administration acted unlawfully and abused its powers by placing the police in Washington under federal control.
Schwalb stated that the deployment of National Guard troops in the US capital was a "forced military occupation," and violated local autonomy. He further argued that military units like the National Guard are not permitted to perform police duties such as arrests within the US under current law.
The administration announced a few days earlier that it would deploy the National Guard and place the police of the city under federal control due to alleged rampant crime in Washington. However, Schwalb contends that armed soldiers should not control American citizens on American soil, and that the National Guard should not perform police duties.
The legal authority for the state of Washington in this case was initiated by the Governor, who ordered the National Guard to assume duty. The lawsuit was posted on the X platform, and a judge in California came to the same conclusion just days ago.
This is not the first lawsuit from the District of Washington. Brian Schwalb, Attorney General of the District of Columbia, made a statement on the lawsuit, stating that the deployment of National Guard troops and the control of the police by the federal government is a central point of contention in the lawsuit. The lawsuit against the Trump administration is currently ongoing.
