Main Customs Office in Braunschweig Conducts Audit Against Clan Crime and Black Work

On December 6, 2024, the Main Customs Office in Braunschweig, along with over 1,300 employees from various authorities, launched a nationwide action against black work and illegal employment relationships. The audit, which focused on uncovering tax offenses, was part of a larger operation aimed at preventing undeclared work and illegal employment, particularly in relation to clan crime.

The audit in Braunschweig was a collaborative effort, with 60 colleagues from the Main Customs Office and 61 employees from other authorities participating. On site, the Main Customs Office initiated 11 criminal and 15 administrative offense proceedings. Most of these proceedings were related to illegal residence, while two were due to tax offenses.

During the audit, the customs officers checked for proper social security registration, social benefits, work permits or residence titles, minimum wage compliance, and potential exploitative working conditions. Sixty cases require further investigation, including suspicions of withholding and embezzlement of wages, underpayment of minimum wage, illegal residence, and benefit fraud.

Despite their efforts, the Main Customs Office in Braunschweig could not gain any local specific insights about clan activities during the audit. The authorities aim to protect honest businesses and ensure fair competition, and sending a clear signal that black work and illegal employment are not tolerated in society.
