Federal Student Union Association Presents 21-Day Deadline to the Government Regarding Unresolved Requests
Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Issues 21-Day Ultimatum to Federal Government
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding action on several outstanding issues. The union's President has expressed deep concerns over the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) continuing to outsource the accreditation process for polytechnics in the country, despite assurances to cease from such actions.
One of the key demands is the release of a circular for the payment of Peculiar Academic Allowance by the National Salaries Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC). This allowance, a component of the ASUP/FGN 2010 agreement, has been removed from the budgeting template, and the reasons for its non-release are not clear to the union. The arrears cover a 12-month period and are captured in the budget, but have not been released.
The union is also concerned about the failure of most state governments to implement the New National Minimum Wage. The 25/35% salary review arrears have not been implemented, and the union's NEC has expressed worry over the continued delay and non-approval of a dual mandate structure aimed at eliminating the age-long discrimination against HND holders.
The ASUP's NEC has resolved to issue this ultimatum in response to outstanding demands from an agreement with the union. A failure to address these issues within the 21-day ultimatum may lead to the declaration of a trade dispute and withdrawal of services by ASUP members across public polytechnics and monotechnics nationwide.
In other news, Putin has rejected a meeting with Zelensky abroad and insists on a meeting in Moscow. Meanwhile, the UN has ended air service in Nigeria over poor funding. There has been an unprecedented rise in non-oil revenues in Nigeria, as reported by the Presidency. However, these revenues have yet to significantly impact the education sector, as evidenced by the ongoing issues faced by the ASUP.
In a separate development, a new Ebola outbreak has been declared in the DR Congo. The government is urged to prioritise the resolution of the issues raised by the ASUP to ensure the smooth running of the education sector and the well-being of its staff and students.
