Federal Volunteer Service participants greeted by OB Tim Kurzbach at Town Hall meeting

In the heart of Blade City, 78 committed individuals began their federal voluntary service on September 2, 2023. These volunteers, affectionately referred to as "Bufdis," have taken up their posts in kindergartens, elementary schools, secondary schools, youth facilities, and senior centers across the city of Solingen.

The service, a part of the federal voluntary programme, sees the Bufdis play a vital role in the community. Workshops and other exercises were used to help the volunteers get to know each other, and during the kick-off event on Monday, they were informed about their rights and duties.

The age range of the Bufdis is diverse, with the youngest being 16 years old and the oldest, 61. However, further information about the identity of the oldest volunteer among the newcomers remains undisclosed.

Iris Essenberg, regional coordinator of the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Affairs, and Mayor Tim Kurzbach were both present at the event, expressing their support for the initiative.

Some of the young volunteers view the federal voluntary service as a stepping stone into their professional lives, while others see it as an opportunity to give back to the community. Regardless of their motivations, the Bufdis are making a positive impact in Solingen.

As the service is unspecified, the exact nature of the work carried out by the Bufdis remains unknown. However, their continued deployment in various community facilities suggests that they are making a difference in the lives of many residents in Solingen.

Despite the lack of specific details, one thing is certain: the Bufdis continue to be a valued part of the Blade City community, referred to with warmth and respect as they carry out their duties.
