In the heart of Istanbul, the bustling city that straddles Europe and Asia, the iconic ferries provide a unique link between the shores. For over two centuries, these white vessels have been a constant presence on the Bosphorus Strait, transforming the city's landscape and offering an essential part of its charm.

The Bosphorus Strait, with its powerful currents and potential for three-meter high waves during strong southwesterly winds, has been a challenging yet captivating waterway. It is one of the few cities in the world that can be crossed by sea, making the ferries indispensable for both locals and tourists.

The story of these ferries is deeply rooted in the city's history. Captain Ekrem Özçelik, born into a family of sailors and fishermen, has been a part of this narrative. He recalls the arrival of the ferries in 1843, which transformed the simple fishing villages lining the shores into popular holiday destinations. Today, he serves as a captain on one of Şehir Hatları's 30 vessels, the Paşabahçe ferry, which underwent a two-year restoration and returned to the Bosphorus in 2022.

The Paşabahçe ferry is not the only vessel that carries a piece of history. Ibrahim Bayus, a 62-year-old engineer, fondly recalls his boyhood days when he often forgot to bring money on the ferries. The captain, who knew him, would always let him pass. This familiarity, a testament to the personal touch these ferries have provided, is a sentiment shared by many.

The waters of the Bosphorus Strait have become increasingly crowded, reflecting the city's growth and development. In 2024, a staggering 41,300 vessels passed through the strait. Şehir Hatları, the main operator, carries at least 40 million passengers a year, ensuring the city's lifeline remains uninterrupted.

Despite the challenges, the ferry experience remains a cherished part of Istanbul's identity. Adil Bali, a specialist on the history of Istanbul's ferries, believes that any view of Istanbul must include Maiden's Tower, a ferry, and a seagull. As the city continues to evolve, the ferries remain a constant, offering a glimpse into Istanbul's rich past and promising future.
