Festive commencement of Kunstfest Weimar, featuring Wallraff-Oper on Tuesday
The annual Kunstfest Weimar, Eastern Germany's largest multidisciplinary performing arts event, is currently underway and attracting a wide audience. The festival, now in its ongoing run until September 7, 2025, is renowned for its diverse and thought-provoking programs.
This year's theme, "Living Bravely," is evident in the festival's lineup. One of the highlights is the opera adaptation of Günter Wallraff's investigative journalism book, "Ganz unten," which is scheduled for premiere on Tuesday. The opera promises to continue the trend of provocative and relevant performances at the Kunstfest Weimar.
The theater production of Brett Bailey's "Faust X" has been very well attended at the beginning of the festival. Bailey, a South African director, sets the Faust material after Goethe in relation to today's tech oligarchs, offering a contemporary take on the classic tale.
However, a planned conversation between Omri Boehm and Jens-Christian Wagner for the festival had to be cancelled due to Boehm's illness. Boehm, a German-Israeli philosopher, had previously expressed critical views on the Israeli memorial site Yad Vashem and Israeli politics, which led to criticism from the Israeli embassy in Berlin when it was known that the foundation had invited him.
In light of Boehm's cancellation, Yigal Schwartz stepped in to replace him in connection with Kunstfest Weimar 2021. The artistic director of the festival, Rolf C. Hemke, expressed satisfaction with the response to the festival so far and noted that the Taiwanese circus shows have been in high demand.
Despite Boehm's cancelled speech, the foundation promised to invite him at a later date. The cancelled speech was a replacement date for an originally planned appearance by Boehm at the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp.
There are still some remaining tickets for the performances of "Faust X," and the opera adaptation of "Ganz unten" is considered another significant addition to the festival. Hemke, who has been the artistic director since 2019, is overseeing the festival for the last time, as this year's edition marks his final tenure.
The Kunstfest Weimar continues to push boundaries and provoke thought, making it an essential event for arts enthusiasts in Eastern Germany and beyond.
