Fewer than two thousand Syrian residents are not receiving federal assistance
In 2024, a significant milestone was reached in Germany as a total of 83,150 people of Syrian origin became German citizens. This accounted for 28% of the total naturalizations during that period, making Syrian nationals the largest group to undergo the naturalization process.
The figures were determined using data from the Federal Statistical Office. The number of Syrian naturalizations in 2024 was the highest among all nationalities, highlighting a notable increase in the naturalization process for Syrian citizens in Germany in recent years.
The JUNGE FREIHEIT reported an increasing trend of Syrian citizens being naturalized in Germany. The Foreigner Central Register (AZR) provided the figures for the number of Syrian citizens living in Germany, which stood at 955,000 as of the end of July 2025.
Most of the Syrian citizens in Germany arrived during and after the migration crisis in 2015. The REAG/GARP federal program, designed to assist migrants in returning to their home countries, has seen relatively fewer Syrians making use of it. As of the end of May 2025, fewer than 2,000 Syrians had used federal assistance to return home.
The program offers various forms of financial aid. Adults receive a starting aid of 1,000 Euros, and children receive 500 Euros. Additionally, there are travel allowances of 200 Euros per adult and 100 Euros per child. Up to 2,000 Euros is also provided for medical costs.
However, it's important to note that official sources do not have specific data about the total number of naturalized persons in Germany in 2024 with Syrian roots.
By the end of August 2025, 1,867 migrants had left the country through this program, according to dpa and the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Despite the program's availability, the number of Syrian citizens living in Germany remains significantly higher than the number of Syrians who have used federal assistance to return home.
This trend suggests a growing integration of Syrian citizens into German society, a testament to the country's welcoming approach towards refugees and migrants.
