Mexico Prepares for Historic Third World Cup Tournament

The eyes of the world will be on Mexico in 2026 as the country prepares to host the FIFA World Cup for the third time. President Claudia Sheinbaum received a complimentary ticket for the opening match of the tournament, which will take place at Mexico City's Estadio Banorte (formerly Estadio Azteca) on June 11, 2026.

The Mexican Soccer Federation expects the 2026 World Cup to generate a significant economic windfall for the country, with estimates suggesting it could bring in up to $3 billion. Additionally, the tournament is projected to create approximately 24,000 jobs in Mexico.

Tourism revenues from the World Cup are expected to surpass $1 billion from an estimated 5.5 million visitors. The Mexican government is hoping to capitalize on this influx of tourists, with Guadalajara and Monterrey also serving as host cities for the matches.

President Sheinbaum has announced that she intends to give away the real opening match ticket, with reports suggesting she is considering giving it to a young girl who loves soccer and wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to attend the game.

The decision to give away the ticket was made during a discussion between President Sheinbaum and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who presented her with a giant replica of the front-row ticket for the inaugural match. The conversation focused on preparations for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico City.

In a social media post on Thursday, President Sheinbaum expressed her appreciation for Infantino's visit and recognised the historic role Mexico will play in the quadrennial tournament. She stated, "It's going to be a very important moment for Mexico."

Mexico has a rich history of hosting the World Cup, having previously done so in 1970 and 1986. By hosting the 2026 tournament, Mexico will become the first nation to host three different World Cup tournaments.

The World Cup opening ceremony will take place alongside the opening match, with estimates of the number of viewers running as high as 6 billion. President Sheinbaum has expressed her excitement for the event, saying, "The eyes of the world will be upon us, and, as always, Mexico's people will be generous and filled with joy."

In addition to the economic and tourism benefits, the 2026 World Cup is expected to bring a sense of pride and unity to the Mexican people. As President Sheinbaum stated, "It's going to be a very important moment for Mexico."
