Fifteen-year-old victim identified in South Side's fatal double shooting; police interrogating potential suspect
A shooting on the South Side of Chicago, in the Canaryville neighbourhood, has left two boys in critical condition and claimed the life of one of the victims. The incident occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Thursday afternoon in a vacant lot in the 600-block of West 47th Street.
According to area detectives, the shooting involved a fight between the victims and an unknown number of suspects. At least one suspect pulled out a gun and shot the boys. The 12-year-old victim was shot in the chest, while the 15-year-old victim, later identified as Alex Durante, was shot in the hip area.
The 15-year-old victim died on Friday morning. The 12-year-old victim is currently receiving treatment at University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.
One of the boys was able to run away to the back of a nearby barbershop, Style Headquarters, before collapsing on the ground. The owner of the barbershop, who wishes to remain anonymous, found the boy shot multiple times. The clothes of one of the victims remain on the ground, in the back of Style Headquarters.
Alderman Raymond Lopez has expressed concern about the shooting and suggested the need for increased uniform presence in the area. However, there's no information available on whether national guardsmen have been deployed to increase uniform presence in the area.
The police are speaking with a person of interest in connection with the shooting, but the person's identity has not been publicly disclosed. No further details about the suspects or the reconstruction work in the area were provided.
The barbershop owner, who has been operating his business for five years, has never seen such an incident in the neighbourhood. This shooting marks a disturbing trend of violence in the city.
Our thoughts are with the families of the victims during this difficult time. We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
