Fifty establishments ignored a potential threat from a 13-year-old - "Fifty establishments declined to accept a 13-year-old girl deemed risky"
A 13-year-old girl, who was previously deemed dangerous, allegedly stabbed a caregiver in the back in a youth psychiatry unit on August 16. The incident took place at an unspecified location within the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association (LWL).
The homicide commission is currently investigating the attack, but the exact details of the incident have not been disclosed.
Prior to the attack, the girl had been in various facilities of different support systems since 2024. Around 50 institutions had previously refused to admit her, according to a report.
The rapid online radicalization of the minor was known to the involved ministries, starting around the beginning of 2023. In early 2023, the minor was classified as a threat by the state protection in Lower Saxony.
The district administrator of Paderborn reached out to several ministers in desperation regarding the girl's case in mid-May, seeking support for her individual situation.
Family Minister Josefine Paul (Greens) made a report to the state parliament's children and youth committee about the girl's case. With the support of the four ministries for family, interior, health, and justice, an experienced youth welfare carrier was found for the girl.
Following the attack, the girl was accommodated again in a psychiatry. The state government, however, did not provide immediate solutions for her care. It remains unclear what measures will be taken moving forward.
This incident has raised concerns about the handling of dangerous minors in psychiatric facilities and the need for improved communication and coordination between various authorities.
