Venice Film Festival Awards: A Celebration of International Cinema

The 82nd Venice Film Festival has come to a close, and the awards have been announced, honouring a diverse range of films and filmmakers from around the world.

In the Horizons Section, the award for best screenplay went to Ana Cristina Barragán for the film Hiedra, a story set in an orphanage in Ecuador. The film tells the tale of Azucena (Simone Bucio) and her connection with Julio (Francis Eddu Llumiquinga).

The Horizons Section award for best director in this edition goes to Anuparna Roy for Songs of Forgotten Trees. The film explores the life of a woman living in a remote village in India, and her struggle to preserve her culture and traditions.

The award for best film in the Horizons section went to On the Road, directed by David Pablos. This love story between Veneno (Víctor Prieto) and Muñeco (Osvaldo Sánchez) is set in the dangerous roads of northern Mexico. The film also received the Queer Lion, a collateral award of the Festival, for its exploration of homosexual themes.

In the main competition, the Golden Lion for Best Film was awarded to Jim Jarmusch for his tragicomedy MotherFatherSonDaughter. The film features an impressive cast, including Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Charlotte Rampling, and Cate Blanchett. Jarmusch expressed his gratitude for the award, calling it an "unexpected honor."

Toni Servillo was awarded the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor for his role in The Grace. Chinese actress Xin Zhilei won the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress for her work in The Sun Rises on Us All.

The Horizons Section also awarded the Special Jury Prize to Lost Land, directed by Akio Fujimoto. The film tells the story of a man who returns to his native Japan to find his lost identity.

The Venice Opera Prima Prize in Venice Spotlight went to Short Summer, directed by Nastia Korkia. The film tells the story of a young girl who goes on a journey of self-discovery.

Carmen Maura, the director of Calle Malaga, expressed outrage over the situation in Gaza and Palestine during the award ceremony. The film, which tells the story of a woman who lives alone in her native Tangier and eagerly awaits the visit of her daughter, received the Spotlight Audience Award.

In addition, Kaouther Ben Hania won the Silver Lion - Grand Jury Prize for The Voice of Hind Rajab, a film about the death of Palestinian girl Hind Rajab.

Finally, the award for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 82nd Venice Film Festival went to Asghar Farhadi for "A Hero." The film tells the story of a man who is released from prison and must repay a debt to a creditor, but faces unexpected challenges along the way.

The Venice Film Festival is a celebration of the best in international cinema, and this year's awards showcase the diversity and talent of filmmakers from around the world.
