Final hearing at the Transport Committee on local transportation matters
In a recent meeting of the Mobility and Traffic Committee, several key decisions were made regarding the city's infrastructure development.
The redesign of Altenberger-Dom-Straße has been a major point of discussion. The SPD, Greens, and FWG have expressed their support for the project, while the CDU has opposed it. However, the identity of the applicant who initiated the legal dispute that delayed the reconstruction decision remains unclear.
A feasibility study has been made available for the bridge that will replace the railway crossing at Tannenbergstraße, connecting the Britannia hut with Kalkstraße. The bridge, it was determined, is technically feasible and can be connected to Kalkstraße.
The committee also voted for variant 3 for the Friesensstraße planning. The Greens, SPD, FWG, and FDP voted in favour, while the CDU and AfD voted against. This variant maintains some parking spots in contrast to the preliminary planning, where all around 26 parking spots in the public space would be removed. Jörg Laschet of the FWG proposed this compromise.
The old embankment will be used for more than just a cycle path. It will also serve as a relief for the parallel Bensberger Straße, accommodating future shuttle traffic, either on rails or in the form of autonomous driving.
The damaged pavement in the pedestrian zone is being addressed by enlarging tree pits at specific points to eliminate tripping hazards.
The final design plan for the central section between Kempener and Leverkusener Straße was also discussed.
In an effort to create more space, Wupsi and RVK are considering relocating or adjusting part of the regular bus traffic. Contact has been made with market vendors to ensure they continue to use the pedestrian zone as an alternative space.
The city administration cannot change certain decisions by the railway, but is working to ensure reasonable replacement traffic. A CDU member tried to postpone the decision, relying on a complaint from a citizen. However, the city's legal department stated that the complaint has no chance of success.
A proposal was approved to install a streetlight for a school route between the Weizenfeld and the Engelsfuhr in Hebborn, a decision that was initially rejected by the administration due to cost.
Lastly, Migenda referred to "Track 19", the branch from the Tannenberg track to the old embankment, which remains an important part of the planning despite being decommissioned. The legal dispute over the liability of the company that allegedly laid the pavement incorrectly is ongoing, with a verdict expected soon. However, the implications for the pedestrian zone in the city center should not be discussed during the election campaign.
