Financial Allocation of 1500 Euros for Women's Shelters in Hanau and MKK Establishments
In the heart of Hanau, a unique project has brought together the community, service clubs, and local politics in a mission to support women's shelters. The initiative, known as the "City-Shopper" bags, was launched in 2024 by Cornelia Gasche, the then women's officer, and Hanau artist Sanja Zivo.
These eco-friendly bags were created from old city run banners, transforming discarded materials into practical and stylish accessories. The project received the support of the service clubs, who helped produce and sell the bags at the after-work market. A total of 31 bags were sold, with 30 euros from each sale donated to the women's shelters.
The handover ceremony took place in front of Hanau Town Hall, attended by Mayor Dr. Maximilian Bieri, Councilwoman Isabelle Hemsley, Thorsten Stolz, district administrator of the Main-Kinzig district, and representatives from the service clubs. Thorsten Stolz praised the good cooperation and the reliable partnership of the artist Sanja Zivo and the service clubs in financing the work of the women's shelters.
Councilwoman Isabelle Hemsley emphasised the importance of bringing the topic of "violence against women and girls" into the public eye. She expressed her gratitude for the initiative, stating, "This project not only promotes sustainability but also raises awareness and funds for a crucial cause."
The money raised from the sale of the bags, along with additional funds collected by the service clubs, resulted in a total donation of 1,500 euros. Lea Kircher from the Wächtersbach Women's Shelter and Lisa Ortwein from the Hanau Women's Shelter expressed their gratitude for the donation, stating that the funds will be used to organise a long excursion for the children living in the shelters.
The success of the "City-Shopper" bags project has set a positive example for future community initiatives. The next city run, themed "Show Strength - Against Violence Against Women", will take place on Friday, September 19. The event aims to continue the conversation and raise awareness about the issue, encouraging the community to stand together against violence.
