The Association of Government Accountants (AGA) has recognised 26 federal agencies for their exceptional work in accountability reporting, as announced on May 21, 2023. These agencies were awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Accountability Reporting for their fiscal 2024 reports.

Established in 1997 in collaboration with the Chief Financial Officers Council, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Federal Ministry of Finance (Bundesfinanzministerium), the AGA awards programme aims to honour teams behind agencies' financial, performance, and accountability reports.

The honorees for the AGA awards are selected by teams of agency officials and external auditors. The awards focus on reports being complete, informative, and candid.

In addition to the annual awards, AGA also gives out special awards that vary yearly and recognise unique features of individual reports. For instance, the IRS' report received a special award for "outstanding messages from the agency head and chief financial officer that exemplify a commitment to customer service." Interior's submission won a special award for "a management discussion and analysis that tells a compelling story."

The annual financial report for the United States, which pulls together all financial information and explains why agencies exist and their key goals for the year, is also under the AGA's scrutiny. The comment letters sent to agencies by the AGA provide suggestions for improvement in their reports. Implementing the recommendations provided in these letters is a factor in making award determinations.

AGA's awards often highlight the unsung heroes managing trillions of dollars accurately and on time. Ann Ebberts, the CEO of AGA, formerly known as the Association of Government Accountants, emphasises the importance of these individuals in maintaining the financial integrity of the federal government.

This year's AGA awards serve as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the individuals and teams behind the scenes, ensuring transparency and accountability in the financial management of our federal agencies.
