Financial institution Sparkasse alerts its customers about an impending disruption in PayPal services, urging prompt action
In recent days, Sparkasse, the German savings banks, has raised the alarm over a series of suspicious calls that claim to be from a credit institution, informing account holders about a "repair of PayPal transactions."
These calls, it seems, are not from the genuine PayPal or Sparkasse. Instead, scammers are impersonating bank employees in an attempt to obtain customers' Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), Transaction Authentication Numbers (TANs), or passwords.
The ongoing disruption with PayPal has provided an opportunity for these criminals, who are exploiting the delays and confusion caused by the outage. It's important to note that neither Sparkasse nor PayPal would ever contact customers about such issues over the phone.
If you receive such a call, it's crucial to end the conversation immediately and not share any sensitive information. If you have already shared data, it's advised to block your account immediately via the hotline 116116.
Unfortunately, more and more Sparkasse customers are reporting these suspicious calls. The scammers put callers under pressure and ask for personal data and TANs, creating a sense of urgency to trick customers into divulging their information.
It's also worth noting that the phone numbers used by scammers may appear authentic. So, if you suspect a scam, it's best to hang up and contact your bank directly using a trusted number.
On Tuesday morning, the problems with PayPal were resolved, and Sparkasse customers can now use their accounts as normal. However, it's important to remain vigilant and remember that your bank will never ask for sensitive information over the phone.
Sparkasse advises PayPal customers to contact them immediately if they have been contacted by suspicious callers. They urge account holders to never share their PIN, TAN, or passwords with third parties.
Occasional disturbances with PayPal are still occurring for Sparkasse customers, but with this heightened awareness, we can all help to prevent fraud and protect our accounts.
