Fire erupts underground at Dornröschenweg in FW Bergheim: A battery blaze triggers significant smoke emission

In the quiet evening of Bergheim district's Quadrath-Ichendorf, a surprising event unfolded. On Wednesday, around 8:30 PM, the Bergheim Fire Department received a call about a basement fire on Dornröschen Way.

Upon arrival, thick smoke billowed from the entrance door of the single-family home. Brandamtmann Jens Wiehne, the fire department's leader, coordinated the efforts to combat the blaze.

Approximately 40 personnel from the Quadrath-Ichendorf, Ahe, Bergheim units, and the full-time station joined the operation. A team in breathing apparatus entered the basement, where they found a burning battery and flames spreading to adjacent furniture.

Thankfully, no one was inside the building when the fire department arrived. The team quickly brought the fire under control, and a second team conducted follow-up operations, ventilating the building extensively and taking readings for harmful substances.

The operation ended at 10:00 PM. However, the fire department cannot provide information on the extent of the damage or the exact cause of the fire at this time.

It is important to note that the name of the fire chief who led the firefighting operation in the arson case on Dornröschen Weg in Bergheim is not publicly available.

The Fire Department Bergheim would like to remind residents to prioritise fire safety in their homes, ensuring batteries are properly disposed of and all electrical appliances are in good working order. Stay safe, Bergheim!
