Firefighters Engaged in a Prolonged Battle: A Conveyor Belt Inflames, Causing Hours of Struggle
In the heart of the City of Arnsberg, an unexpected incident unfolded on Hellefelder Street on Saturday, 7th September, 2025. At around 1 PM, the Arnsberg Fire Department was dispatched to a smoke emission outside, marking the start of a significant firefighting operation.
The smoke was observed over the grounds of an industrial facility, prompting the alarm level to be raised to "Fire 5 - Confirmed fire in industrial building." The Arnsberg Fire Department, along with additional crews, sprang into action.
The scene was divided into three sections to better coordinate the numerous crews. The focus of the operation was a conveyor belt that transports paper residues, where the fire was located. The crews in heavy protective gear worked tirelessly to control, extinguish, and partially empty the pulper, the machine into which the conveyor belt feeds the waste.
To ensure the self-protection of the crews, the German Red Cross provided a rescue vehicle, while also ensuring the crews' well-being with drinks and warm meals. The adjacent paper storage was cooled as a precaution by the installed sprinkler system.
On-scene crews also set up a "firebreak" to protect an adjacent production building from the flames. A turntable ladder was brought into position to combat the fire more effectively. Additional crews from the Sauerland control center were mobilized to reinforce the efforts.
At its peak, over 126 crews were fighting the fire. The operation on Hellefelder Street lasted over eight hours. The conveyor belt was cooled from the outside using water to contain the fire.
The Fire Department of the City of Arnsberg, Oeventrop fire brigade, Rumbeck fire group, communications service, command service, full-time staff from Arnsberg and Neheim, and emergency medical services all responded to the incident. However, there is no specific information that any units were taken out of service to coordinate the situation more effectively.
