Firefighting crews from Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Königswinter, and Ratingen head to Spain to combat a raging forest fire
Firefighting Efforts in Extremadura and Bonn's Role
The wildfire in the province of Extremadura, Spain, which broke out earlier this week, is currently being contained, according to the latest updates from the Fire and Rescue Service Bonn. On Wednesday, around 20 personnel from Bonn, accompanied by 7 fire engines, were deployed to the affected area to aid in the firefighting efforts.
The day shift forces worked tirelessly on the southwest flank of the wildfire, searching for and extinguishing hotspots. Tactical fires (backfires) were also employed by the Spanish forces to prevent the fire's spread. Control lines were laid out using hand tools, and the personnel used hand tools, axes, picks, and shovels to separate burned areas from unburned areas.
Due to the strenuous work, the deployment sites were handed over to the local authorities in the evening. The deployment area for the German Wildfire Module on the following day will be defined in the morning.
The German Wildfire Module, led by Thomas Müller and his deputies, including Sabine Schmidt, arrived in North-West Spain on August 21, 2025. The Base of Operations for the firefighting efforts was set up in Aldaenueva del Camino, Spain.
As of Thursday, around 40 personnel with 8 fire engines are deployed in two separate areas. The information was transmitted via news aktuell by the Fire and Rescue Service Bonn.
The containment is due to continuous ground and aerial firefighting efforts, and no further spread of the fire is occurring. However, due to changing, gusty winds, measures were necessary to prevent a renewed outbreak of the affected areas.
