Five French boxers are no longer part of the World Cup competition
The World Boxing Championships are currently underway in Liverpool, England, but five French boxers find themselves on the sidelines due to a delay in the results of their gender tests.
According to the rules of the World Boxing Championships, adult athletes must undergo a PCR test or equivalent genetic screening test to confirm their gender at birth. This requirement is a recent introduction by the World Boxing Association, in response to the controversy surrounding boxers Imane Khelif from Algeria and Lin Yu-ting from Taiwan at the Paris Summer Games.
Initially, the lab was unable to deliver the test results in time for the registration of the French boxers. As a result, they were directed to a lab in Leeds, England for their gender tests. However, the delayed results have led to their exclusion from the championships.
Boxers from other delegations have also been affected by this issue, further highlighting the complexity of implementing such a rule.
The French boxing federation announced their exclusion "with surprise and indignation," and the French Sports Minister, Marie Barsacq, has described the incident as "unacceptable."
Meanwhile, Imane Khelif, an Algerian Olympic gold medalist boxer, has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the World Boxing Association's decision to bar her from upcoming events without a prior genetic test. Khelif disputes claims of retirement, asserting she was born female and intends to continue her career.
In France, gender tests are not permitted, which adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges that can arise when implementing new rules and regulations, especially in an international sporting context. The World Boxing Championships continue in Liverpool without the five French boxers, and it remains to be seen how this issue will be resolved.
