UAE Court Convicts International Drug Trafficking Gang

In a significant development, a UAE court has convicted five men for their involvement in an organised drug trafficking gang, operating within the country. The defendants, of Asian and Arab nationalities, were arrested in various parts of the UAE and their leader, an Arab national originally from Nigeria, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The court proceedings revealed that the gang was involved in the trafficking of illicit substances, including methamphetamine, tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabis, and hashish. During the arrests, police seized quantities of these substances, along with cash, tools used for packing narcotics, and other paraphernalia.

Investigations uncovered that the gang's leader was coordinating with an accomplice residing outside the UAE, using social media to direct drug users to drop-off points in exchange for money. The accomplice would also receive GPS coordinates of the drop-off sites from the defendants.

The court did not reveal any new information about the gang's leader or the Asian suspect coordinating with the leader from outside the UAE. Similarly, there was no mention of any accomplice using social media to direct drug users to drop-off points in exchange for money.

Two men arrested in the ringleader's apartment were sentenced to two years in prison each for drug use, in addition to deportation. Two other defendants, both Asian nationals, were handed life sentences. The court also ordered the deportation of the fourth and fifth defendants after they serve their sentences.

It was also established that drug shipments were being delivered through unidentified intermediaries and hidden at several sites across Abu Dhabi and Dubai. However, the court did not sentence any defendants for distributing narcotics at multiple locations across the UAE.

In addition to the seized substances, the court ordered the confiscation of two vehicles used in the trafficking operations, mobile phones, and packing equipment. The court did not sentence any defendants for running an organised drug trafficking gang.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the UAE and the significant penalties for those involved in such activities. The UAE continues to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of its citizens and visitors, and will not tolerate criminal activities that threaten this.
