Flaming rooftop of a school auditorium

On May 22, 2025, a fire broke out on the roof of the Waldhausen-Gymnasium in Mönchengladbach, Germany. The Mönchengladbach Fire Department, under the command of Brand Oberinspektor Roman Crützen, was swiftly alerted by an automatic fire alarm system and an emergency call.

Upon arrival, the fire had already been partially contained by contractors who had used fire extinguishers to control the blaze. The Fire and Rescue Stations I (Neuwerk), II (Holt), and a help fire engine from Fire and Rescue Station III (Rheydt) were immediately involved in the operation. Additionally, the Hardt and City Centre units of the Volunteer Fire Department, a tank fire engine, an air supply container, and the hygiene equipment vehicle from the Technical and Logistics Centre (Holt) joined the effort. A doctor's emergency vehicle and four ambulance vehicles were also on the scene.

The fire was extinguished, and the gymnasium was cleared of smoke using a high-performance fan. Unfortunately, one person sustained burn injuries during the extinguishing attempt. Four students were examined by the emergency medical services for suspected smoke inhalation, and one student was treated for a panic attack. The emergency medical services provided first aid and transported the injured person to a hospital in Mönchengladbach.
