Flood protection improved in Rumpenheim: levee restoration completed successfully
In the heart of Hesse, the city of Offenbach has made a significant stride in securing its future against flood events. The Main dike in the district of Rumpenheim has undergone renovation and elevation, marking a long-term investment in the city's resilience.
The dike, reinforced with red Main sandstone, now boasts a strengthened and more resistant structure. This sandstone cladding, installed according to heritage regulations, not only enhances the dike's durability but also preserves the historic charm of the surroundings.
The state of Hesse has secured funding of 80 to 85 percent for the dike construction. The remaining costs, amounting to around 7.75 million euros, have been covered by various contributors, including the water association "Gewässer- und Bodenverband Rumpenheim" and the city itself.
A mobile system of beams and supports was used in areas with existing buildings to compensate for the remaining dike height. This system, operated by the city of Offenbach's own operation (ESO), can be installed in case of impending floods in the dike gates to Schmiedegasse, Fischergasse, Untergasse, and Neugasse.
Climate adaptation measures, despite becoming increasingly expensive, cannot be avoided. With the frequency of extreme weather events on the rise due to climate change, flood protection in Offenbach remains a central topic.
The renovation process was meticulously coordinated with the heritage protection authorities to preserve the historical character of the surroundings. Notable structures, such as the historical ice deflector at the castle park and the "Gasthaus Zum Schiffchen," were carefully maintained during the renovation.
Further works on the dike section along the city center, scheduled for next year, are likely to incur significant cost increases. However, the benefits of a robust flood protection system far outweigh these costs.
