Heavy rain has caused disruptions to rail services in the regions of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, with a flooded railway crossing in Roßla, Saxony-Anhalt, being one of the affected areas.

Services between Halle and Kassel are currently affected due to the flooding, and delays are being reported on these routes. The Halle-Kassel and Halle-Leinefelde (RE8/RE9) and Sangerhausen-Heiligenstadt (RB57) services are experiencing delays.

Freight traffic is also affected and is currently being rerouted.

The heavy rain is expected to continue in these regions on Thursday, with a low-pressure system from the former Hurricane "Erin" west of Scotland causing the repeated rain. According to DWD forecasts, the heavy rain will ease off towards the evening.

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a warning for heavy thunderstorms in many parts of Thuringia, and there may be sudden flooding of roads and underpasses, and aquaplaning due to the heavy rain.

Firefighters supported Deutsche Bahn with clearance work at the flooded crossing overnight, and clearance work is ongoing at the site, with involvement from Deutsche Bahn staff, employees of the municipality, and the Südharz wastewater association.

Despite the disruptions, there have been no reported personal injuries due to the flooded roads and fallen trees. There have been some fire service deployments due to the flooded roads and fallen trees, but no significant incidents have been reported.

Heavy rain has caused flooded roads and fallen trees in other parts of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, and buses are running as a replacement for train services between Sangerhausen and Nordhausen.

Despite the challenges posed by the weather, efforts are ongoing to restore normal service as quickly as possible. It is currently not possible to give a prognosis for when the tracks will be reopened.

The risk of lightning strikes, falling trees and objects, and hail is high, and people are advised to take caution when travelling in the affected areas. The heavy rain is expected to affect many parts of the country, with heavy rain in a band from the southwest to the northeast.

Stay safe and follow updates from local authorities for the latest information on travel conditions in the affected areas.
