Flooding Prevention Strategies Discussed

In the heart of the Detmold district, the small village of Klüt faced a significant test on June 14th when a thunderstorm front passed over the Lippe, bringing two heavy rain showers. These showers, equivalent to a century's worth of heavy rain, were significantly above the statistical once-in-a-century heavy rain, with locally recorded rainfall of 50-60 millimeters in just 15 minutes.

Designed to prevent damage from such heavy rain, the flood protection measures in Klüt demonstrated their effectiveness. Engineer Andreas Hoffmann, who designed and implemented these measures, summarised the stress test as successful.

The combination of all measures - trench-dam systems, diversions, emergency waterways - in Klüt led to the rainwater being released into the Klütbach and Oetternbach in a delayed manner without causing flooding. The water guidance measures on the upper Mittelstraße at the height of the Rudolf-Harbig-Weg diverted mud and water from the fields away from the street in Klüt, further ensuring the village's safety.

Further down in the village at the height of Mittelstraße 59, the water took the intended emergency waterway and caused no damage in Klüt. Even the newly set sheet pile wall near the Dürener Straße, which was a cause for concern due to its potential for water retention, remained unaffected.

This marks the third time since 2023 and 2024 that the flood protection measures in Klüt have successfully prevented the district from being affected by flooding. The test on June 14th was the first time these measures were tested in Klüt, providing reassurance to the local community.

While the planning of the flood protection extensions in Klüt remains unclear, the success of these measures serves as a testament to the hard work and foresight of those involved in their design and implementation. As Klüt continues to grow and develop, these flood protection measures will undoubtedly play a crucial role in ensuring the village's resilience in the face of future weather events.
