Flooding protection system's second installation phase accomplished successfully

In the picturesque town of Lindau and its neighbouring area of Sulzsteg, a significant milestone was reached on Saturday, 12.07.25, as a trial assembly of a mobile flood protection system took place. This marks the first large-scale application of such elements in the flood protection system for these cities.

The protective line, spanning a total length of 1.275 meters, was built in seven meticulously planned sections. It starts at the Krautelstein bridge and ends at the Sulzsteg mouth. Seven mobile barriers, each varying in assembly height from one to 5.4 meters, were set up along this line.

The basic protection is mainly ensured by a 1.060-meter-long concrete wall with a height of one to three meters in the main area, and a 115-meter-long flood dyke with a crown width of four meters and an internal sheet pile wall sealing in the eastern area. An underground sealing with a foundation depth of between two and six meters was carried out along the entire length to provide additional stability.

In case of a flood, eight crossings of the protective line are to be closed with these mobile elements. To ensure efficient operation, pressure pipes with a diameter of up to 2.2 meters and five underground pumping stations were built for pumping off surface water.

The assembly was carried out at night to minimise traffic disruption in case of an emergency. Ten employees of the municipal works department were present, receiving instruction from the manufacturer. Construction began in 2020, following the first construction and maintenance agreement in 2018, and was represented by the State Water Management Office.

The feasibility study for the flood protection system in Lindau was conducted in 2013 by the State Water Management Office in Deggendorf. The Free State of Bavaria, the city of Passau, and the European Union are bearing the costs for this extensive project, with the total costs for construction and planning currently amounting to approximately 38.8 million euros.

It's worth noting that the flood protection in Sulzsteg itself, with a height of approximately six meters, was already tested last year. The remaining barriers were set up and stored in the flood storage according to specified assembly levels, ready for deployment should the need arise.

This trial assembly signifies a significant step forward in the flood protection system for Lindau and Sulzsteg, ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents in the face of potential floods.
