Florida to abolish all compulsory vaccination requirements for children in the state
Florida Announces "Make America Healthy Again" Commission to Promote Medical Freedom
In a significant move, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the creation of a state-level "Make America Healthy Again" (MAHA) commission. The commission, modeled after federal initiatives by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., aims to promote informed consent in medical matters, safe and nutritious food, boost parental rights in medical decisions for children, and eliminate unsupported medical orthodoxy.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who serves as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Social Services as of February 2025, has been appointed as the chair of the commission. The commission will be chaired by Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and Florida first lady Casey DeSantis.
Florida's initiative is unique as it aims to eliminate multiple vaccine mandates, making it the first state to do so, according to State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo. The commission's work will help inform a "medical freedom package" to be introduced in the Florida legislature, addressing vaccine mandates required by state law and making permanent recent state COVID-19 decisions relaxing restrictions.
Ladapo, who has cancelled $500M in mRNA vaccine funding, believes that people have the right to make informed decisions about their own bodies and that the state should not dictate vaccines. He considers current vaccine requirements as an "immoral" intrusion on people's rights, bordering on "slavery."
Under DeSantis' leadership, Florida did not impose COVID-19 vaccines on schoolchildren, require "passports" for crowded places, or mandate vaccines for workers to keep their jobs. The governor has stated that there will be a broad package in the "medical freedom package."
While the specific vaccines targeted for elimination are yet to be specified, Ladapo emphasized that the effort aims to end "all of them. Every last one of them." The commission's work will focus on ensuring that individuals have the freedom to make informed decisions about their health without undue government interference.
Meanwhile, in Alberta, the cost for most citizens to get the COVID-19 vaccine has been revealed, and in Manitoba, parents are urged to get kids their measles vaccines before the school year begins. These developments highlight the ongoing debate about vaccine mandates and individual rights, a debate that the Florida MAHA commission aims to contribute to.
