Florist Georgie Newbery, founder of Common Farm Flowers, trading high-end fashion for floral arrangements
In the picturesque countryside of Somerset, Georgie Newbery and her husband Fabrizio Bocca have been running Common Farm Flowers since 2010. The seven-acre smallholding is home to a thriving flower farm, where Georgie manages the growing, propagating, and cutting of flowers, while Fabrizio tends to the sustainable features of the land, including wildflower meadows, ponds, and native hedges.
Georgie's journey into flower farming began somewhat unexpectedly. Having lived in Paris working for Vogue and John Galliano, she found herself drawn to the beauty of nature upon moving to Somerset. Initially selling flower posies at a local farmers' market, she soon realised that people preferred to add their own foliage to a bunch of cheaper flowers. A light-bulb moment came when she received a bouquet by post from the Real Flower Company, sparking the idea to make cut flowers her business.
Common Farm Flowers quickly grew, and Georgie started running workshops at the farm, teaching others the art of flower cultivation. Alongside providing and arranging flowers for weddings, funerals, and special events, she also began offering bouquets by post. Four years later, she published "The Flower Farmer's Year", a book that shares her experiences and knowledge of small-scale flower farming.
As the popularity of small-scale flower farming as a source of income has increased significantly, so too has the demand for Georgie's expertise. To cater to this growing audience, she has reduced the number of workshop days at the farm to ten a year, focusing more on online courses and mentoring. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she took her courses and demos online, including Growing Dahlias, Cutting and Conditioning Flowers, and more.
Georgie's commitment to her craft extends beyond the farm. She uses social media to connect with people who share her love for growing cut flowers, and her online presence has helped her reach a wider audience. Despite her success, she remains organised and focused, managing her various responsibilities one task at a time.
Georgie's ultimate goal is to help as many people as possible grow, sell, and arrange flowers, and to provide guidance on running a small business. She is not just a flower farmer, florist, teacher, mentor, writer, and communicator, but a beacon of inspiration for those looking to cultivate their own piece of nature's beauty.
