Focus on Waste Prevention in BSR's 2025 Cleanliness Campaign
The district office of Mitte is taking an active role in the city-wide cleanliness campaign, dubbed #MitteMakesClean. This initiative, launched to combat illegal dumping, particularly from commercial enterprises, is a collaborative effort to keep Berlin clean and livable.
Environment Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) and BSR CEO Stephanie Otto announced the campaign on August 4, 2025. The campaign follows a three-pronged approach: education, offers, and enforcement. The goal is to achieve sustainable cleanliness in Berlin, where everyone feels comfortable and the city remains livable through the engagement of many.
BSR, Berlin's waste management service, has identified small waste items like to-go packaging, cigarette butts, and drink cups as a persistent challenge in public spaces. The increase in mobile food offerings has exacerbated the problem of careless disposal. To address this, the campaign aims to raise awareness about waste avoidance and correct disposal as a societal task.
The campaign features colourful illustrations of everyday waste objects, such as a talking pomme frites or an old mattress, to encourage Berliners to dispose of waste correctly. BSR currently operates around 27,000 public paper bins, including about 300 large-volume containers at heavily frequented locations.
Senatorin Bonde also announced a more stringent fine catalog would be introduced in the short term to deal more consistently with repeated offenses. Many people do not utilize the existing disposal infrastructure, according to Stephanie Otto. The campaign underscores the importance of everyone's participation in maintaining Berlin's cleanliness.
The campaign's motto is "Cleanliness only works together." Over 8,200 people participated in these events, and a total of 124 tons of bulky waste were collected. The location at Triftstraße corner Tegelerstraße was particularly well-attended, with over 1,000 participants.
The campaign includes regular clean-up actions, information events, expanded disposal options for bulky waste, and intensified controls by the public order office. In 2024, BSR removed around 54,000 cubic meters of illegally dumped waste throughout Berlin, an increase compared to the previous year, resulting in approximately 10.3 million euros in costs.
Each person is reminded that they can contribute to more cleanliness. Sustainable cleanliness can only be achieved if everyone participates. The campaign motifs appear on paper bins, BSR vehicles, and in social media, serving as a constant reminder of the campaign's mission.
In the first half of 2025, the district office of Mitte held a total of 16 BSR neighborhood days, six more than the previous year. This shows the district's commitment to the cleanliness campaign and its efforts to engage the community in making Berlin a cleaner and more livable city.
