Following a grisly casino homicide, the culprit met their end after spending 29 years on death row in Tennessee.

In the U.S. state of Mississippi, over two decades ago, a tragic event unfolded at the Sam's Town Casino in Tunica. On April 18, 1996, Shannon Sanderson, a 25-year-old mother of three, won approximately 5,000 USD playing blackjack. Little did she know, this victory would lead to her untimely death.

Gerald Powers, a man with a dark past, followed Sanderson for about 40 miles (approx. 64 kilometers) to her home in Memphis. After the murder, Powers returned to his family in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and claimed to have won at the casino. However, investigations soon revealed a grim truth.

Powers had taken Sanderson to an abandoned house, where he brutally shot her and stole her winnings and jewelry. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud argument outside Sanderson's house and seeing a man drag her into the back seat of a Chevrolet Beretta.

Powers was convicted in a 1999 trial for first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. He spent nearly 30 years on death row at the maximum-security Riverbend prison in Nashville, Tennessee, before his death on April 13, 2023.

The exact cause of Powers' death is still pending investigation by the medical examiner, but it is known that he died of terminal cancer. His execution, scheduled for this year, was stayed in 2022 due to concerns about Tennessee's lethal injection protocol.

This brutal casino murder is not an isolated incident. In recent years, several crimes involving casino wins have made headlines. For instance, in August 2024, a couple won 3,000 USD at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa, Florida, only to be robbed and injured by two men. Charges of attempted murder were filed in the case.

Robberies on casinos are not uncommon. The famous Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas was robbed in 2010, with the Biker Bandit getting away with 1.5 million USD. He was arrested a few months later.

Powers' wife became suspicious when she saw him cleaning his car thoroughly. She notified the police after seeing a news report about Sanderson's murder.

The tragic story of Shannon Sanderson serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that can lurk even in moments of celebration. Her memory lives on, and justice was served, albeit posthumously, with Gerald Powers' conviction and subsequent death.
