Following the train collision in Riedlingen 14 days ago, here's what we currently know...

On the 27th of July, a tragic incident occurred near Riedlingen in the Biberach district, as a regional express train derailed. Preliminary investigations suggest that the derailment may have been caused by a landslide onto the tracks, allegedly due to a collapsed sewer shaft after a storm.

The accident claimed the lives of three individuals: a 32-year-old train driver, a 36-year-old trainee, and a 70-year-old passenger. Thirty-six people were injured, some severely. The recovery of the derailed train's wreckage was completed three days after the accident. At the accident site in Riedlingen, bent tracks and a heavily damaged track bed remain.

Nico Rebenack, the district chairman of the GDL train drivers' union, expressed his understanding if train drivers chose to stay home in the days following the accident, but there were no more sick notes than usual. He also stated that passing the accident site immediately after such an incident is tough for train drivers.

The Federal Bureau of Railway Accident Investigation and the Verkehrswissenschaftlichen Institut Stuttgart (VWI) are conducting investigations into the Riedlingen accident. A final report is not expected to be ready for several months.

The railway line between Herbertingen and Munderkingen will remain closed until early November. This closure is seen as positive by Rebenack, as it allows for a thorough investigation and repair of the damaged track.

A memorial service was held for the victims of the train accident in Zwiefalten monastery church. Approximately 500 people attended, including emergency services, politicians, and the railway CEO. After the memorial service, a gathering was held for affected people, residents, and helpers.

The extent of the damage is still being investigated, and repairs to the track are being planned. The accident site was marked on the risk map of the German Center for Rail Research.

As the community continues to heal and the investigations progress, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved.
