Following Woltemade's departure, VfB enthusiastically supports Gladbach.
In a thrilling opening match of the 2022-23 Bundesliga season, VfB Stuttgart emerged victorious against Borussia Mönchengladbach, securing a 1-0 victory.
The winning goal came in the 79th minute, courtesy of Chema Andrés, who scored from a set piece. Andrés's goal was a testament to Stuttgart's resilience and their ability to capitalise on opportunities.
The offensive play for Stuttgart was somewhat affected by the departure of Nick Woltemade to Newcastle United during the summer transfer window. However, the club had bolstered their squad with eight new signings, including Lorenz Assignon, Noah Darvich, and Lazar Jovanovic, to compensate for the departures.
One of the new additions, Chris Fuhrich, came on as a substitute for Deniz Undav and immediately got involved in the attack. Unfortunately, Tiago Tomás had a chance to score for Stuttgart but failed to convert a pass from Fuhrich.
Undav himself had to be substituted due to a knee injury during the match, which was a blow for Stuttgart. Despite this setback, the team showed great determination and managed to hold on to their lead.
Borussia Mönchengladbach, playing in front of 60,000 spectators, failed to score their first goal of the season, despite several chances. Kevin Stöger missed a chance to put Borussia ahead in the 51st minute, and Alexander Nübel's poor pass resulted in a good shooting opportunity for Lukas Ullrich, which he unfortunately missed in the 22nd minute.
Stuttgart's goalkeeper, Nübel, also made several crucial saves throughout the match, including a header from Philipp Sander after a free kick.
The departure of Woltemade and Enzo Millot, two key players from last season, has undoubtedly left a void in Stuttgart's squad. However, the club's management, led by board chairman Alexander Wehrle, remains calm about finding solutions before the transfer deadline. Wehrle is confident that they will present good solutions by the end of the transfer period.
Former Stuttgart midfielder Sami Khedira agreed with the club's decision to sell Woltemade for such a high amount, stating that it was a necessary step to strengthen the squad. Jamie Leweling, another Stuttgart player, even expressed that the departure of Woltemade brought some peace to the team.
Leweling himself tested Gladbach's goalkeeper Nicolas with a sharp cross in the 59th minute, but the goal remained elusive for Stuttgart. Nevertheless, the team's victory against Gladbach is a promising start to the season, and they will undoubtedly look to build on this success in their upcoming matches.
