Football player Aktürkoğlu transfers from Benfica to Fenerbahçe, following Mourinho's dismissal at Benfica
Fenerbahçe Secure Kerem Aktürkoğlu Ahead of Europa League Campaign
Fenerbahçe have secured the services of Kerem Aktürkoğlu from Benfica in a deal worth up to €25 million, as they prepare for their Europa League campaign following their exit from the Champions League playoffs.
The Turkish giants finished second in the Süper Lig last season, 11 points behind rivals Galatasaray. They started the new campaign by taking four points from their opening two league fixtures.
The transfer of Aktürkoğlu, who won consecutive Süper Lig titles with Galatasaray before he left for Portugal, marks one of the most high-profile domestic transfers in recent years. Aktürkoğlu is expected to arrive in Istanbul shortly for medical checks before signing his contract with Fenerbahçe.
Galatasaray, Aktürkoğlu's former club, has been informed about the transfer as they hold a preferential right on the player. They will receive €1.05 million from the transfer due to a 10% sell-on clause included in Aktürkoğlu's move to Benfica last year.
Fenerbahçe's elimination from the Champions League playoffs has placed them in the Europa League. The Europa League teams will share a prize fund of €565 million. The draw for the competition has pitted Fenerbahçe against Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia, Aston Villa, Ferencvaros of Hungary, Viktoria Plzen of Czechia, Nice, FCSB of Romania, Stuttgart, and Brann of Norway.
Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe have also announced the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as their new coach, with negotiations reportedly taking place for his appointment as the club aims for a prominent and internationally recognized foreign coach. The new coach will lead Fenerbahçe in their quest for Europa League glory, as they look to end their 17-season absence from the Champions League.
The next 16 teams in the standings will play in two-legged knockout playoffs to join the leading eight in the Europa League. The top eight teams in the league table advance directly to the round of 16 in March. The Europa League final will take place at the Istanbul home of Beşiktaş on May 20, 2026.
