Football team California introduces a fresh supporter area, paying homage to the Raiders.
California Golden Bears Kick Off Second ACC Season with Promising Start
The California Golden Bears are off to a promising start in their second season in the ACC, following a victory in their season opener against Oregon State. The team's quarterback, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, shone in his Cal debut, throwing for 234 yards with three touchdowns.
As the Bears prepare for their home games, they are introducing a new wrinkle, paying tribute to the old Oakland Raiders look. The new section, The Black Bear, located in the south end zone of their stadium, is a tribute to The Black Hole, the famed Raiders cheering section.
The Black Hole, originally founded in part by Oakland native Rob Rivera, made a transition to the south end zone of Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Sadly, Rivera passed away in 2021 due to complications with COVID-19. The Black Bear section will be designated solely for fans who purchase a ticket through the group's link on CalBears.com.
The Bears' home schedule includes a notable game against Bill Belichick's North Carolina program in October. Another home game is scheduled for September 13 against Minnesota. The season finale for Cal will be against SMU.
The first home game for Cal is against Texas Southern. This information was reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel. The new general manager for the California football program is former NFL coach Ron Rivera.
The Black Bear section will welcome fans starting from the Texas Southern game. The California Golden Bears are eager to continue their strong start in the ACC and are looking forward to the support of their fans in The Black Bear section.
