Wildfires continue to ravage Portugal and Spain, with preliminary estimates suggesting over 4,000 square kilometers of nature have been destroyed in Spain since the beginning of the year. The situation in both countries is developing, but there are signs of progress.

In Spain, the burned area is much larger than the Saarland, covering around 2,570 square kilometers. As of now, there are still 16 active wildfires in the country. However, the Director-General for Civil Protection, Virginia Barcones, has stated that the situation is improving.

To combat the fires, Spain has requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). In response, 67 firefighters from Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia have been deployed in Spain. This deployment is coordinated through the UCPM, with North Rhine-Westphalia activating its certified German Forest Firefighting Module (GFFF-V), which Lower Saxony supports with additional vehicles and personnel.

Unfortunately, the battle against the wildfires has taken a tragic toll. Eight people have died in wildfires in Portugal and Spain in August. One of the fires being fought is in Arganil, located in the center of Portugal. On Saturday, a fourth firefighter died in the battle against the major wildfires in Portugal. The 45-year-old firefighter had burns covering 75 percent of his body and suffered severe burns on Tuesday while fighting a fire near the town of Sabugal in Portugal.

Portugal has also been severely affected by the wildfires, with an area of almost 2,800 square kilometers affected. Around 1,400 firefighters are still deployed in Portugal to combat fires. Other fires in Portugal are either under control or extinguished.

Despite the challenges, efforts to control the wildfires are ongoing. Let's hope for a swift resolution to this crisis and a return to normalcy for the affected communities.
