Nuno Espirito Santo Sacked as Nottingham Forest Coach Amidst Deteriorating Relationship with Owner

Nottingham Forest have parted ways with Nuno Espirito Santo after a tumultuous season that saw the club finish 17th in the Premier League, their worst league performance since the 1976/77 season. The Portuguese coach, who led the team to European qualification for the first time in 30 years last season by finishing seventh, was dismissed due to a deteriorating relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Cracks in the relationship began to show after Nottingham Forest missed the opportunity to qualify for the Champions League. The tension reached a boiling point following a 3-0 home defeat to West Ham in Nuno's final game in charge, prompting Marinakis to opt for a new direction.

The relationship between Nuno and Marinakis deteriorated this season, and they are not as close as they were last season. The Greek-born Ange Postecoglou is a candidate for the vacant manager position at Nottingham Forest, with Marinakis hoping Postecoglou can repeat his Europa League success, with Forest among the favorites to win the competition.

Nuno took charge of Nottingham Forest in December 2023 after Steve Cooper was sacked. Despite leading the team to a trophy, ending a 17-year wait for silverware, Nuno expressed concerns about Nottingham Forest's transfer activity before the season, stating his squad had been left "unbalanced."

The sports director who took a more active role in signings at Nottingham Forest during the 2024/25 season was not explicitly named in the search results. However, the club underwent managerial changes with Ange Postecoglou taking over as head coach after Nuno's dismissal, and there were indications of ownership and management involvement affecting transfers.

Nottingham Forest sit 10th in the Premier League on four points after three games under the interim management of Steve Cooper's replacement. The club has brought in 13 new players as sporting director Edu Gaspar took a more hands-on role in signings.

In a surprising turn of events, Marinakis appeared to confront Nuno on the pitch following a 2-2 draw against Leicester in May, but the club claimed this was due to the decision to let striker Taiwo Awoniyi play on following an 88th-minute injury that later required urgent abdominal surgery. Nuno has since spoken to Marinakis on the phone and stated they would meet during the international break to address their differences.

As Nottingham Forest move forward, the focus will be on finding a new head coach who can lead the team back to success and restore the club's relationship with its fans. The search for a new manager is ongoing, with Postecoglou's attacking style vastly different from Nuno's cautious approach that reaped rewards at the City Ground.
