Forged Paths Beyond Car Industry: Woven Planet Corporation Sets Flight
In a bold move, Toyota has transformed its research division, Toyota Research Institute-Advanced Development (TRI-AD), into Woven Planet Holdings. The new company, established in January 2021, aims to create a strong leader in forging a new future for everyone and become a mass producer of happiness.
The name "Woven Planet" draws inspiration from the invention of the automatic loom by the company that went on to become Toyota, expressing a determination to carry forth Toyota's spirit and produce happiness for all. Each new company within the Woven Planet Group includes "woven" in its name to emphasize interconnectedness and integration.
Woven Planet Holdings consists of three operating companies: Woven Core, responsible for developing automated driving technologies; Woven Alpha, whose focus is on research and development; and Woven Capital, a global investment fund that will strategically invest in a wide range of partners in the areas of advanced technologies and services related to mobility and robotics.
One of the key projects by Woven Planet Holdings is Woven City, a futuristic community that will start construction on February 23. This city, with 360 residents, including the elderly, families with small children, and inventors, will serve as a testing ground for new technologies and innovations. The goal is to create a city that mass-produces happiness.
Another significant development is the software platform "Arene," created by Woven Planet Holdings. Arene is likened to Windows for personal computers, providing a hardware abstraction layer that allows for independent upgrades and new software installation. Through Arene, it becomes easy to program safely, allowing many other companies to program using Arene APIs and leverage the fact that Woven Planet Group has a reliable and low total cost of ownership. Arene aims to create a complete ecosystem and environment with a stable, well-designed runtime, with 90% of the software needed for automated driving running off-board or in the cloud.
Arene expands the programmable area from privately owned cars to mobility services that interconnect smart cities and smart home environments. This operating system will play a crucial role in the future of mobility, making it easier for various companies to develop and implement advanced technologies.
Akio Toyoda, the Chairman of Toyota, invited others to join and work together to put the future in motion, emphasizing the importance of considering each person's preferences and pivoting, changing, and evolving to create a satisfying experience for all. James Kuffner, CEO of Woven Planet Holdings and one of the founding members of Google, shared similar sentiments, expressing a desire for Woven City to be a place where innovators and inventors can develop and test new technologies together, creating new value for people's lives, work, learning, interaction, communication, and movement.
With a strong focus on innovation, collaboration, and creating happiness for all, Woven Planet Holdings is poised to make significant contributions to the future of mobility and smart cities.
