Former captain of Krasnodar team is unveiled for Champions League competition
Paris Saint-Germain have announced the inclusion of Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov in their squad for the group stage of the Champions League. Safonov joined the French club from Russian side Krasnodar in the summer.
Safonov's debut for PSG could potentially be against Italian side Atalanta, with the two teams set to face off on September 17. The news of his possible debut has generated excitement among fans, as the goalkeeper has shown promising form in the past.
Last season, Safonov played 17 matches for Krasnodar, keeping a impressive 7 clean sheets. Despite not yet making an appearance for PSG this season, the goalkeeper's strong performance last year has not gone unnoticed.
However, Safonov's journey to Paris has not been without its challenges. He faced difficulties during a flight from Paris to Moscow, but has since overcome these obstacles to secure his place in the PSG squad.
Coach Luis Enrique will be hoping that Safonov can bring his form to the Champions League, as he looks to guide PSG to success in Europe's premier club competition.
Safonov is not the only Russian player participating in this year's Champions League. Alexander Golovin, a midfielder for Monaco, and Nikita Khaykin, a goalkeeper for Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, are also set to take part in the tournament. Egor Sorokin, a defender for Kazakh side Kairat, is another Russian player participating in the Champions League.
As the group stage of the Champions League gets underway, the spotlight will be on Safonov as he looks to make his mark for PSG against Atalanta on September 17.
