Former President Yoon Seeks Constitutional Review of Bill Instigating Inquiry into Insurgency Accusation

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol is set to face a merged trial for insurrection charges, alongside former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and police chief Cho Ji-ho. The trial proceedings, which have been ongoing separately for each individual, are expected to be combined into a single case.

Yoon has been absent from his insurrection trial for the eighth consecutive session, citing health issues as the reason for his absence. According to the Criminal Procedure Code, the trial can proceed in his absence as it is deemed impossible or significantly difficult for a prison officer to bring him in by force.

The merged trial will encompass insurrection charges against all three individuals, who were involved in Yoon's failed martial law bid. Insurrection carries a maximum sentence of life in prison or death.

The court proceedings will continue in Yoon's absence, as stated earlier. Judge Jee Kui-youn, who is leading the insurrection trial of Yoon Suk Yeol, has stated that the three cases share key issues and evidence, justifying the merger.

The speed of Yoon's trial has been a point of criticism due to the number of witnesses selected. On Monday, the court is scheduled to hear witness testimony from an official at the Defense Counterintelligence Command, which is related to martial law operations.

Yoon's lawyers have demanded a court file for a constitutional review of the legality of the special probe bill into his insurrection charges, which the former President claims is unconstitutional. The special probe bill is being investigated due to Yoon's insurrection charges.

The merged trial is anticipated to end by December, providing closure to a case that has been the subject of much public interest and debate. The court proceedings will continue, with the hope of shedding light on the events that led to the insurrection charges against Yoon and the other two officials.
