Four consecutive weekends of power interruptions

The city of Munich is embarking on an ambitious infrastructure renewal project, known as the "S3" renovation program. The aim is to revitalize old and failing infrastructure, enhancing the network's resilience by 2027.

In the coming weeks, there will be changes to the S-Bahn timetable for four consecutive weekends, starting from November 23-24, and continuing through November 30-December 1, December 7-8, and December 21-22, 2024. These alterations are due to construction work on a new control center at the East Station, a key part of the "S3" renovation program.

During these weekends, some lines will not stop at all stations. Fewer trains will be in service, and only lines S1, S3, S6, and S8 will be running on the main line. Unfortunately, there will be no S-Bahn service between the East Station and Giesing for 4 to 16 hours each day on the affected weekends.

Passengers travelling between these stations during the disruptions are advised to consider using the U2 or bus 54 as alternatives. It's important to note that disruptions on the main line are expected to last from November 23 until December 22.

In a positive development, the city will build a new subway (U-Bahn) electronic interlocking (Stellwerk) at the Ostbahnhof station as part of the "S3" renovation program. This modern technology will replace the old relay interlocking at Munich Ostbahnhof, and it is planned to go into operation in 2025. Acceptance tests for the new control center will be carried out in the coming weeks, paving the way for its operation in 2025.

The "S3" renovation program is a significant step towards modernizing Munich's transportation infrastructure, ensuring a more reliable and resilient network for all commuters. While the upcoming disruptions may cause inconvenience, the long-term benefits of this project are undeniable.
