Fox power dynamic shifts: Kretzschmar and Siewert excluded from the ranks
Füchse Berlin, the reigning champions of the Bundesliga's second half, find themselves in a period of transition as they prepare for a crucial game against Magdeburg. The game, which holds national significance, is set to take place on Saturday.
The previous season ended on a bitter note for Füchse Berlin, as they lost the Champions League final to Magdeburg, a result that the national coach, Alfred Gislason, described as a close and important one.
Recent developments at the club have seen the departure of sports director Stefan Kretzschmar and coach Jaron Siewert. Their dismissal, the result of weeks of tension, marks the end of an era for Füchse Berlin, who have been under Kretzschmar's leadership since 2020.
Kretzschmar played a significant role in developing the team into a top contender, with his personnel decisions bringing world handball player Gidsel to Berlin, among others. Several top players, including Lasse Andersson, Tobias Grondahl, and Gidsel himself, joined Berlin due to Kretzschmar's personality.
The Foxes now face the challenge of maintaining their international top level without Kretzschmar. Stepping into his shoes is the 38-year-old Dane, Nicolej Krickau, who has been appointed as both coach and sports director. Krickau, who already serves in this dual role since September 2025, has been given a three-year contract with the Berliners.
Max Darj, the captain of Füchse Berlin, has called for focus, stating that they need to concentrate on playing handball. Gidsel, too, has expressed that the game is an opportunity for Berlin to make a statement about their championship potential.
In a bid to ensure a smooth transition, Füchse veteran Paul Drux will act as a link between the team, coach, and management from July 1, 2026. Drux, who has been with the club for many years, will provide valuable insight and experience.
The league has been turned upside down in recent years, with teams like Magdeburg and Berlin dominating. Previously, only Kiel or Flensburg were considered top teams. The upcoming game between Füchse Berlin and Magdeburg promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams eager to prove their mettle.
Kretzschmar, in his departure statement, expressed that it hurts but creates clarity for all parties involved. He leaves behind a legacy of success and a team that is ready to take on the challenges of the future. The Foxes, under the leadership of Krickau and with the support of Drux, will strive to maintain their position at the top of German handball.
