France plunges into tumult as parliament ousts Bayrou's administration
France is facing a political crisis as the government of Prime Minister Francois Bayrou has been voted down by the National Assembly. The defeat comes after the legislature broadly rejected Prime Minister Bayrou's proposed €44 billion in budget savings.
The vote of no confidence was against Prime Minister Bayrou's economic strategy aimed at tackling France's debt and deficit. France is currently running a deficit nearly double the EU's 3% ceiling, and the country's debt burden is among the highest in the European Union, currently at 114% of GDP. A downgrade in France's credit rating could make it more expensive for France to borrow, further straining public finances.
President Emmanuel Macron is expected to receive the resignation of Prime Minister Bayrou on Tuesday. In the coming days, Macron is likely to propose Sébastien Lecornu, the current Defense Minister and a close Macron ally, as the new French Prime Minister.
The political instability has led to calls for snap elections from opposition leaders such as Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Melenchon of France Unbowed. Le Pen has called for snap elections following the collapse of the government, while Melenchon has demanded the resignation of President Macron.
This marks the fifth time that Macron will need to appoint a prime minister in less than two years. The French President has faced numerous challenges since taking office in 2017, including the Yellow Vest protests and the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest political crisis is likely to further test Macron's ability to navigate France's complex political landscape.
As France grapples with its economic woes, the future of the country's government remains uncertain. The opposition parties are calling for a new mandate, while Macron is expected to try to stabilise the situation by appointing a new prime minister and presenting a new economic strategy. The coming days will be crucial as France seeks to avoid a political and economic crisis.
