Fraudulent activities by phony bank workers highlighted in Euskirchen - multiple instances reported in EU-POL area
The Kreispolizeibehörde Euskirchen has issued a warning to residents about a phone scam involving fraudsters posing as bank employees. On Tuesday, August 27th, several incidents occurred in the Euskirchen district, with unknown offenders calling victims and then personally visiting their homes to obtain cash or sensitive bank data.
The perpetrators, described as male and between 165 and 180 cm tall, have a southern or European appearance and are often seen wearing either sportswear (t-shirt, shorts) or a shirt and jeans.
In one incident, a 63-year-old woman in Olpener Straße was asked to reveal her PIN over the phone, but she refused and no damage was done. In another case, an 86-year-old man in Erfurter Straße received a call from someone claiming to be a Sparkasse employee. A man then appeared at his door and tried to obtain his bank details, but the elderly man recognized the scam and alerted the police.
Unfortunately, in another incident, a 90-year-old man in Moselstraße was contacted by phone by someone claiming to be a Sparkasse employee. After being let in, an offender managed to steal a low four-digit amount of cash, pushing the elderly man aside as he left the apartment.
The police urge relatives to inform and sensitize elderly family members about this scam. In the Mechernich-Hostel, Gölerzstraße, a woman received a call demanding a payment of 4,000 euros and her PIN. An offender appeared at her door, but the victim became suspicious, threatened to contact her bank, and the offender left the house.
If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from your bank, the police advise not to give out any personal or banking information. Instead, hang up the phone and contact your bank directly using the official contact details.
