Fresh Apron Designed for Picking Ripe Produce in an Attractive Manner

In this tutorial, we'll guide you through the process of making a charming harvest apron, perfect for gathering fresh produce. Here's what you'll need:

  • 2 yards of pre-washed fabric (60-inch by 5-inch pieces)
  • 2-yard piece of cord
  • Cord lock
  • Marking pins
  • Sharp scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Safety pin
  • 1 large safety pin with cord attached
  • Chopsticks (for pushing seams out during the process)

To begin, trace round corners on your fabric pieces using a round plate. Then, sew the apron with a 1/2-inch seam allowance around the sides and bottom, leaving a 1 1/2-inch opening at the bottom for the drawstring. This opening is reinforced to prevent fraying.

Next, stitch around the sides and bottom of the apron again, this time 1 inch away from the edge, creating a casing for the drawstring. Topstitch very close to the edge around the sides and bottom of the apron, skipping the area you left open at the center bottom.

Pull several inches of cord out of the bottom opening. Attach the large safety pin to the cord and push it through the casing. When the cord is all the way through, even out the two cord ends protruding from the casing.

Pinch the cord lock into an open position and slide the cord through. Tie a double knot in the end of the cord to keep the cord lock from sliding off.

For the waist tie, fold 1/4 inch over on both short ends and press. Then, fold both long edges into the center and press, followed by folding the entire waist tie in half lengthwise and pressing. Fold 1/4 inch over on both short ends of the waist tie again and press.

Pin the waist tie to the apron, tucking the harvest apron into the waist tie, matching the center points, and sew around all four sides of the waist tie to secure it to the apron.

Once everything is sewn, turn the apron right side out and press it flat with a hot iron. Sew across the top of the apron with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, sewing across the cords several times to help keep them secure.

Finally, the project is complete! Your whimsical, adjustable harvest apron is ready for you to use while gathering fresh produce. While the origin of these instructions for sewing the apron remains unknown, the charm of the harvest hanging hats is undeniable.
